Biography
Funeral mass for Charles Martin "Chuck" Opeil, age 92, of Seminole, Texas will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 16, 2007 at St. James Catholic Church, with Father Hugh Thekkel officiating. Military graveside service and burial will follow at Gaines County Memorial Cemetery. Services are under the direction
of Boyer Funeral Home.

Mr. Opeil passed away Monday, November 12, 2007 at Memorial Hospital in Seminole following an illness. He was born January 26, 1915 in Jermyn, Pennsylvania and had a great passion for flying all his life. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1938, completing a 22-year career that spanned many flying, executive, and command positions. Some of his assignments included Instructor Pilot, Director of the B-29 Flight School, and Base Commander. He earned the rank of Colonel in 10 short years, a testament to his flying and leadership skills. He was the recipient of two Air Force Commendation medals and the American Defense Service Medal.

Following his Air Force service, Mr. Opeil served as vice president of Water Tank Services Company, where he oversaw the refurbishment of water tanks throughout the southwest. He left the company to semi-retire in Seminole, where he met and married Sybil Humphreys. Many remember his work for H & R Block as well as his sales of marketing items through the Newton Manufacturing Company. His love for veterans led him to a position as Gaines County Veterans Service Officer in 1979, which originally was a two-year position. He retired from this position 28 years later, at the age of 92!

Mr. Opeil was a great patriot and a wonderful people person; he rarely met anyone whose name he did not remember. During his lifetime, he was an avid reader and taught himself to paint, garden, and do glassblowing and woodworking.

Mr. Opeil is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one sister.

Pallbearers will be Gaines County Commissioner Blair Thorpe, Commissioner Craig Belt, Commissioner Danny Yocum, Commissioner Charlie Lopez, Assistant District Attorney Joe Nagy, WWII Veteran Warren "Baldy" Boyer, Vietnam Veteran Leroy Tedford, and Vietnam Veteran Sid Lopez. Honorary pallbearers include VFW Post #8917 and Jimmy Fisher.
